2017 Spring Novice Class—May 13th to June 14th

The Chester River Rowing Club invites you to try your hand at rowing by joining the 2016 Spring Novice Class, where you can…

– Learn to “scull”—to row by yourself in a single, or with a partner in a double.

– Join the crew in the larger “sweep” boats.

– Meet others who think that rowing on the Chester River is a wondrous thing.

– Improve your fitness & maybe lose a few pounds.

For anyone in reasonably good health and condition, age 14 and up, who wants to learn to row.

Saturday, May 13, 8 to 11 am–Orientation and introduction to sculling and sweep rowing (scullers each have two oars; sweep boat rowers have two hands on one oar—see photos). Novices watch a safety video and learn to carry, launch and stow shells.

Mondays & Wednesdays, 6 to 8 pm, May 15 to June 14–Novices learn the stroke in an indoor training tank, then move to the river—as weather permits— where they row in sweep boats and sculls under the watchful eye of the coaching staff.

Optional–Saturdays, 8 am, May 20 to June 10–Novices row with experienced club members.

Wednesday, June 14–Graduation & barbeque.
